Tight Race for the Championship

Bakersfield, CA – For the first time in SPEARS Southwest Tour Series history, there are ten drivers who still have a legitimate shot at the series title at the halfway point of the season.

Greg Voigt of Goleta, California carries the championship lead into the next event at Stockton 99 Speedway with 746 points. Voigt’s NTS Motorsports teammate, Blaine Rocha of Oakdale, California is in tenth position in the championship standings, with 669, just 77 points out of the lead.

“We’ve never seen this tight of a championship at this point in the season,” stated the SRL’s Larry Collins. “Usually, two or three drivers distance themselves from the rest by this point, but we have a legitimate ten teams who have a great shot at the title. Each race will be important, and each point gained or lost will have an impact on the standings.”

A SPEARS Southwest Tour Series win is worth 180 points, second place is 170, third 165, 155, 150, then each position is four points different, until eleventh place, where the difference is just three points for the remaining final positions.

Squeezed between Voigt and Rocha in the top ten in the standings are; Jeff Bischofberger in second with 716 points, Carlos Vieira third at 711, Parker Stephens fourth at 710, Ryan Cansdale fifth at 707, Tracy Bolin with 693, Brandon White at 691, Keith Spangler in eighth with 676, and ninth is Jacob Gomes with 674 points.

“Carlos Vieira is the only driver who has finished in the top ten at each race so far. Everyone else has at least one finish outside the top ten.” Collins added. “I think the team that wins the championship, is the team that limits its bad races for the rest of the season.”

Just four races remain to determine the 2015 SPEARS Southwest Tour Series champion; the next race is Saturday, August 22nd on the ¼ mile at Stockton 99 Speedway, featuring SRL SPEARS Southwest Tour Series with the Legends of the Pacific, Super Stocks, Basic 4-Cylinders & Mini Cups
